Here you will find out how to obtain a Marriage License
*Please note that guidelines may vary according to the specific county that you reside in.
Wayne County
The age for getting married is 18 without parental consent and 16 with parental consent. Parents must appear with their identification with 16 or 17 year old applicants. Custodial Parents must appear and bring proof of custody.
BIRTH CERTIFICATES
Every Person must present a CERTIFIED COPY [WITH SEAL] of their birth certificate with parental information. Birth registrations, hospital certificates, baptismal certificates will not be accepted.
ALL FOREIGN BIRTH CERTIFICATES MUST BE TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH BY A CERTIFIED TRANSLATOR TO BE ACCEPTED. A NOTARY OTHER THAN THE TRANSLATOR MUST NOTARIZE THE TRANSLATOR'S SIGNATURE.
WHERE TO APPLY
It is necessary to obtain a marriage license from the County Clerk of the county in which either applicant resides. Only Wayne County residents can apply here. If both parties are non-residents of Michigan, the applicants must apply in the county in which the marriage is to be preformed. At least one of the parties must appear in person to apply.
Oakland County
Marriage License applications are available through the Oakland County Clerk's Office. You must apply in person at the Vital Records office or online.
You must be 18 years of age and the opposite gender to apply for a marriage application in Michigan. Persons 16 and 17 years of age must show a certified copy of their birth certificate and have written consent of one parent or legal guardian, who must appear at the time of application with picture identification.
For the purpose of marriage application, residency is determined by a current valid driver's license or state i.d.
If you are a Michigan resident, you must apply in the county where you live. If both parties are Michigan residents, you may apply in either county. The license is valid throughout the state.
If both parties are out-of-state residents, you must apply in the county where you are going to be married. The license is valid in that county only.
The following is required of both parties:
Valid driver's license or state ID showing current address.
Birth certificate or valid passport. (If passport is used instead of birth certificate, full names of both parents and the state or country where they were born must be provided at time of application.)
Social Security numbers of both parties pursuant to MCL 551.102.
Fee per couple: $20.00 for Michigan residents; $30.00 for out-of-state residents.
Apply in person: One or both parties must appear to apply for the marriage license. If only one applicant is present, you must have all items listed above for both parties (a photo copy, front and back, of your fiance's driver's license or state ID will be accepted.)
Apply online: One or both parties must pick up the marriage license with all items listed above for both parties (a photo copy, front and back, of your fiance's driver's license or state ID will be accepted.)

Do not apply if your wedding ceremony will be held more than 34 days from today.
Macomb County
Macomb County residents must apply and show proper photo identification (driver's license with a Macomb County address). Birth certificates are helpful but not required; however, 16 and 17-year-old applicants are required to present a certified birth certificate, and the minor must be accompanied by a custodial parent or guardian who must sign a consent form. The custodial parent, guardian, and minor must present picture identification.
If applicants live in two different Michigan counties, the applicant must apply in the county where he or she lives. We will need to see a valid driver's license or state ID to verify the applicant is a Macomb County resident.
If one person lives in Michigan and one out of state, apply at the office of the County Clerk of the Michigan resident. When both applicants live out of state, application must be made in the county in which the marriage will take place.
Applicants must wait three days from the day of application before picking up the license. This waiting period does not include the application day. The license is valid anywhere in the state for thirty-three (33) days from the date of application.
Even though you apply for your marriage license in the county you live in, you can get married any place in Michigan.
To perform marriage ceremonies a person should be an ordained minister, magistrate (a civil officer with power to administer and enforce law -- Justice of the Peace), mayor of a Michigan city or a judge. If a minister was ordained online, please contact the State of Michigan at (517) 335-8666. Please note that Macomb County no longer has a "Justice of the Peace."
